Steve Michaels Restores Asylum Brand, Hires Jodi Flynn at The Content Group

Steve Michaels has formed new parent company Asylum Entertainment Group, under whose banner his The Content Group will now sit. Michaels has named longtime colleague and Content Group president Ryann Lauckner to an elevated role as president and chief strategy officer of Asylum Entertainment Group. Veteran producer Jodi Flynn has been tapped to succeed Lauckner as president of The Content Group. Flynn and Lauckner each report to Michaels.

Here is some background. Michaels in 2003 launched production company Asylum Entertainment, which he sold to Legendary in 2014. Last year, he bought back Asylum and launched a new company, The Content Group, using the Asylum slate, staff and infrastructure as a backbone, including naming former Asylum executive Lauckner as Content Group president.

The Content Group was established as a creative collective rooted in non-exclusive partnership deals with producers, filmmakers and talent across all areas of entertainment content. Both The Content Group and Asylum Entertainment Group will now take a partner-centric approach to projects and acquisitions, with each slated to announce new production companies and partnerships in the coming months.

There are newly revealed details about The Content Group’s business model. It will offer each partner competitive splits on fees and backend. The company will also pay out “bonuses” of $50,000 each time a partner hits a revenue or profit marker. Most significantly, The Content Group is committing to its partners 30% of net profits from a future sale and/or major transaction.

“Both Jodi and Ryann bring singular production and management expertise, as well as maverick points of view, to the process of creating a content ecosystem,” Michaels said. “I could not be prouder of this leadership team as we begin to share more of our vision and work alongside the best creative partners in the business.”

Flynn most recently served as president of Outpost Entertainment, an ITV company, with hit series including Forged in Fire and Forged in Fire: Knife or Death, both airing on History. Flynn will continue to collaborate with ITV on the production of Forged In Fire and Knife or Death, and remains attached to both shows. Before that, she was executive vice president, development and programming, at Cineflix Productions. She also served as vice president, development, for Screaming Flea Productions, shepherding series including cult hit Hoarders for A&E.

Before Asylum Entertainment Group and serving as president of The Content Group, Lauckner was EVP of programming at Asylum Entertainment, with series including Origins for NatGeo; To Rome For Love for Bravo; Eli Roth’s History of Horror for AMC; and In Ice Cold Blood for Oxygen. Prior to her six-year tenure at Asylum, she was a freelance producer working on such hits as Hell’s Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares, Big Brother and The Bachelorette.
